Why I don’t use trendy peel-off masks

Beauty / May 04, 2018

I’m a self-proclaimed mask lover. I use masks as often as I can, especially after a long day, when my skin isn’t responding to the usual beauty products I have. Sometimes, I even look forward to doing my mask when I achieve something, like a form of reward.

This is why I’m also very conscious of which mask I use. Like other beauty products, it is important that it’s gentle on the skin.

It’s amusing to watch people use those trendy black peel-off masks. I’m not keen on trying it myself, and I wouldn’t recommend it to others, either.

I don’t doubt the trendy masks’ efficacy in removing impurities from your pores. What I’m concerned of are the long-term effects. If you keep pulling your skin like that, blemishes and wrinkles will surely follow.

If you’re harsh to your skin, remember that it will give back just what you gave it. The positive effects may be immediate, but they won’t last. Your skin can’t be dependent on it— meaning, more painful pulling sessions.

I’m not knocking these masks completely. I’m just a bit concerned that the trend might be too good to be true. If you’re new to using masks, consider different options targeting specific problems, with proven results.

Favorite

A big favorite in my collection is the Mario Badescu Super Collagen Mask—a beauty industry favorite. You can’t go wrong. You’ll even enjoy taking selfies because it’s green. It’s perfect for different skin types. The mask is a savior when your skin feels distressed.

I use this at least twice a week, especially when my skin needs plumping. This is great when you want to avoid fine lines and sallow skin. It also smells mild and relaxing. Top it off with moisturizer after you wash it off. This mask gives you a mini-spa experience.

The Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque is my other favorite. You can smell the charcoal used in the product. It is also made with
bentonite clay—yes, that wonder ingredient that works miracles. I use this mask when I feel I have enlarged pores. This is great this summer as you spend a lot of time under the heat. Those pores need some TLC!

I start my routine with cold water to soothe my pores, leave this mask on for around 10 minutes, and then wash off. Instant relief!

On oily days, I turn to Dermalogica’s Charcoal Rescue Masque. It invigorates, detoxifies and brightens skin. There are several ingredients in this product: activated binchotan charcoal, sulfur, volcanic ash, sea salt, bamboo extract, Chilean wild mint and alpha hydroxy acids. The charcoal absorbs the impurities, while sulfur helps exfoliate and the other ingredients help with brightening and refining the skin.

When it comes to hydration, I like the Chanel Hydra Beauty Masque De Nuit Au Camélia. This hydrating and oxygenating overnight mask is made with camellia flowers. I reserve this for an all-out skincare routine.

I go through all my beauty steps thoroughly and put this on my skin just before I sleep, making sure my skin absorbs it first. It won’t make sense when it just goes on my pillow!

It helps when you have a big presentation the next day. You get to wake up refreshed with better skin. Oh, it’s perfect for the lips, too! I think this would also be a good mask to pack when you travel since it does double duty, cutting down on the things you have to bring with you.
