Every year, fashion has its version of the Oscars. It’s MET Gala. Held every first Monday in May, the build-up towards the event begins even the year before, just right after the previous gala ends.
Every year, a theme is announced, featuring a movement of design that shaped fashion or a designer whose body of work has influenced so much of what we see. Last year, the MET Gala focused on Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons. This year is controversial, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The theme is so tricky that it’s been reported that Anna Wintour visited The Vatican to approve of the exhibit. Irreverent or not, fashion always is fascinated with Catholicism when it comes to design. Think of the controversial looks of Madonna and Lady Gaga. How crosses have been designed and fashioned to look trendy all the time. This year, the MET gala shows how even some silhouettes of daily wear have taken inspiration from papal vestments.
These elements are the reasons why it’s exciting to watch the celebrities invited to the Gala. With an opulent theme, a lot of the celebrities took it to heart and just ran with it in terms of pizzaz, glitz, and even outright ostentatiousness. Let’s take a look, shall we?
