I was quite excited to hear today’s big news: Cynthia Nixon running for New York governor.
You may be fretting: a celebrity in politics? Well, I don’t think that should be an issue. Cynthia is a New Yorker who knows that her star power and name recall can be used to serve people. With our focus on social media and the defintions of “influential,” this run should be welcomed and celebrated.
The New York Times reports that Cynthia’s announcement video topped Twitter trends within minutes and the views racked up to a million on the same night. It can take years to build that kind of traction. If Cynthia wants to use it for public service as opposed to simple hawking the latest in trends, I’m all for it.

I also feel that Cynthia is a woman who is empowered enough to know she can make a change. It’s great to see more women like her stepping up in this #MeToo era. Cynthia is an active advocate of planned parenthood. She also wrote a great piece for CNN on how in Trump’s America, it’s up to those who know what is right to take action.
We should not also forget that as a woman, Cynthia is defying the usual boxes society usually puts us in. Just because she’s famous for being in a sex-comedy about New York, doesn’t mean that’s all she is. People should be treated and seen for the many layers that make them up and for the many roles they can fulfill in life.
I’m excited to see how things will turn out and how Cynthia will convince New Yorkers will vote for her. I’m hoping it’ll be quite the story that will help inspire women out there to challenge what’s in front of them. Photo courtesy of Cynthia Nixon’s Instagram account
