Lion King remains to be one enduring classic. Every kid back in the ’90s watched it like it was a requirement for a good childhood. And I know that adults love it as well. This is why one cannot help be excited for the Manila run of Lion King: The Musical.
Musicals enrich the beloved story further and add a little dimension to it. The songs, onstage artistry, and live factor make it all exciting for kids-at-heart. To psyche you up to see the show, I gathered some fun facts about the musical.
#1 Seven new songs
I think the producers knew how much we loved singing to Lion King songs, they gave us a bonus. Seven new songs are featured in the musical that were not included in the original animated movie.
#2 Attention to detail
Each of the corsets in the musical are handmade. It takes at least two dates to sew and set each authetic corset for the show, which means you’re getting a visual feast with their costumes.
#3 Powered by a woman
Julie Taymor, the woman behind the onstage adapatation of the 1994 film, became the first woman in history to win a Tony award for directing a musical, along with a nod for original costume design.
#4 Still breaking records
Speaking of smashing the record, this Manila staging of Lion King marks the first international tour of the musical. Previously, it’s always just been on Broadway and West End. Just goes to show that the story is well-loved all over the globe.
#5 Try not to sing along
Just prepare yourself for nostalgia as the musical features the Elton John original “Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” Both songs which are central to the story were nominated for an Oscar, with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” ultimately earning Elton the accolade for Best Original Song.
