#ThrowbackThursday: Gloria Vanderbilt’s ‘Perfect Fit’ Jeans

Culture / August 31, 2017

American pop culture isn’t complete without mentioning Gloria Vanderbilt.

The multihyphenate–she’s a designer, actress, heiress, socialite, artist, and author–has fame, fortune, hardships follow her through the years. But if we’re going to talk about her influence and prestige, we can’t miss out on her “perfect fit” jeans.

Her curve-hugging, snug jeans with a swan embroidered at the back (a signature) took the ’70s by storm.

The jeans came about through sheer luck, when she met Mohan Murjani of India who owned a blouse company on Seventh Avenue after facing problems with her two-year-old dress business. Her stint at Murjani’s led her to an amazing range of denim fabric they stored away in Hongkong, which became the foundation of the fashion item she founded.
