Everyone’s in a rush to wrap the year up—have you finished sending out those Christmas presents yet?—but I suggest sitting down and taking things slow when approaching the year that’s coming. We all want to start fresh this 2017 and that entails setting up your wardrobe to fit next season’s trends. When it comes to bags in particular, set aside your frilly crossbodies and other remnants of sparkly Christmas. Let’s talk about structured minaudières, floppy purses, and other cute things in between.
Tote bags
Forget your dirty, beaten, free canvas bags. S/S17 welcomes a range of tote bags in silhouettes you haven’t seen before. Injected with equal doses of whimsy and class, this season’s tote bags come in various sizes and adorned with unconventional detail.
I personally love Celine’s rendition of the tote bag this season. Not only are the colors so easy to wear—black, white, and brown make for a foolproof combo—its unique floppy-but-not-really body gives it enough character to make it memorable enough to flaunt. I can imagine this hanging on my arm as I go out to shop and I’ll be dunking things I love into this roomy, dreamy tote.
Clutch
While clutches aren’t the most roomy of the lot, these little things carry so much character, it’s enough to catch and hold somebody’s attention. Ditch old-fashioned, monotonous metallic clutches for something bolder and more unpredictable this time.
Emilio Pucci debuted a multi-colored purse that’s out of the ordinary. Not only was it bigger than the usual clutch, it showed off a vibrant and festive color palette reflective of the season. Oscar de la Renta also released a clutch with an interesting, textured print that shows off its oriental influence; I’m loving its complementary salmon and aqua palette that’s fit for the summer ahead.
If you’re less about the bold prints and more about the room, clutches take a different form in Creatures of Comfort’s line. Looking more like a hybrid of the tote and clutch, this piece can both be practical and a stylish one.
Backpacks
I’m far from being the sporty kind and I guess that’s why I’ve little reason to sport backpacks. But this season has just convinced me otherwise. With 2017’s colorful knapsack selection, I think these are some of the cutest in the summer bag lot.
Fit for long trips that require you to pack your whole life before jetsetting, this Versace bag comes in deep blue leather with cool aqua strappy accents. Rely on this piece for room and style. Maison Margiela, on the other hand, offers something more petite: This orange-and-blue rucksack flaunts a texture as interesting as the places this will go with you.
