Here’s a show I wouldn’t miss.
The Museum of Modern Art is staging “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”–its first fashion exhibition since 1944. You might ask, “So why should I go?” Good question. Well, apart from the fact that this is the one of the museum’s most-anticipated shows in a while, it’s not quite like the fashion showcase you think it would be.
According to insiders and press online, the exhibition serves as a visual document of the ever-changing landscape of fashion and the genius behind its innovative landmarks. Curated by senior architecture and design curator Paola Antonelli and her team, “Items” contains 111 pieces ranging from forward-thinking hoodies, hijabs, and yoga pants to stilettos, aviator sunglasses, loafers, and the little black dress. The exhibition also includes a few beauty labels.
Modernity is mapped out through articles we’ve worn since the 20th century. These are set in context, helping us viewers place which era they were relevant in. Most importantly, the items throw back to each other, making references in the same venue it’s asked to stand alone. It’ll be much easier to feel connected and therefore, it’s also easier to belong.
Catch it before it ends this January 2018.
