Keep your eyes peeled for Dina Gadia. The artist is back at Silverlens with an exhibition curiously titled “Situation Amongst the Furnishings.” Like her art before this, each piece carries a hefty amount of irony depicted in deceptively playful elements.
Dina’s penchant for comic-like subjects (think Lichtenstein’s pop art figures) makes her work easy to remember and associate with. Unlike many contemporary artists who obscure meaning and require their viewers to be at some sort of intellectual level, Dina and her art, for me, are pretty transparent. Her humor is visible in the ironic narratives she pieces and paints. Yet her work stays complex, sometimes tongue-in-cheek.
“Situation” features parts of the home as the literal setting for her message. Each work navigates nooks and crannies as much as it dissects the gray matters of real life. Funny because her pieces are vibrant. Pops of vintage and muted orange, yellows, and blues give off a 70s vibe to each one. Dina’s pieces are lively despite its wry humor; they could color a dull room and make people talk!
Looking interesting? Here are some fun facts about the artist:
- She owns around eight tote bags. Her favorite is the one with a coconut/palm print that was given to her by Kathy Gener.
- The grade of her right eye is 275. The left is 350.
- She likes menswear more than womenswear (like the custom-made glenplaid pants she’s wearing in the photos)
- She likes Susan Roces more than Amalia Fuentes because she’s more familiar with the former than the latter.
- She had a hard time naming her favorite color.
Make sure to drop by the exhibit, which runs till August 12.
