HOW TO: Makeup that lasts under your mask

Beauty / October 16, 2020

What’s the makeup trend of the year? I’ll tell you that it’s “mask-proof makeup.” Some of you out there may have forgone wearing makeup completely, which is great. But a lot of us still love to play around with our palettes. The act of putting on makeup isn’t just about the looks; it can bring comfort in these times.

I will be talking about five tips on how to make your makeup smudge-proof. This is for all of you who miss putting on a full face of makeup. Mask-proof makeup isn’t about just applying cheek tint and calling it a day. Your application technique is about maximizing your makeup.

The first rule is to use a good primer. A makeup primer turns your face into a canvas that makeup can stick to, as opposed to transferring on to your mask and even the frames of your face shield or goggles.

You can try the Huda Beauty Matte Perfection Pre-Makeup Base. The formula absorbs oil so you have a matte canvas, but also has plant extracts so your skin is still moisturized.

My second rule is about sticking to mattifying formulations. This applies to your foundation, concealer, blush and contour. Dewy formulations tend to smudge, and given the moisture between your skin and your mask, there’s no way around it

One of the most raved-about foundations recently is the Pat McGrath Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Foundation. The foundation features skin-caring qualities like a Vita-Serum Complex to moisturize and help fight the formation of wrinkles, and the Diamond Core Powder Technology which enhances skin’s texture, and helps smoothen and blur the appearance of fine lines, pores and imperfections.

When it comes to blush, reach for a matte powder foundation. Say goodbye for a bit to creams and liquid formulations, and try to avoid shimmery blushes, as well. Chantecaille offers the Pink Cheek Shade in Coral (Laughter) as part of their limited edition 20th anniversary collection.

The warm peachy-pink shade is suitable for all skin types, and is buildable. I suggest you go with a little more blush than usual these days. This is important, too, during video calls, as your device’s lights can wash out the blush on your cheeks.

My third rule when it comes to mask-proof makeup involves your technique. When applying your makeup, use a sponge or a brush that you constantly wet with your setting spray. Don’t use your setting spray at the end to seal your makeup. Incorporating the spray into the product with your applicator means your makeup is now extra long wearing.

There are a lot of setting sprays out there, but you should definitely go for something like the Cover FX Mattifying Setting Spray. It is an alcohol-free formula delivered in a fine mist that promises a weightless, long-wearing matte finish while absorbing surface shine and minimizing the appearance of pores.

My fourth rule is about layering your makeup. This is different from applying your makeup thickly. Layering your makeup means you have to build on top of your products so they can work together for that lasting effect.

This is important around the eyes, since they come in contact with the edge of the mask. Start first with a color corrector, go in with your concealer and bake with your powder.

The Makeup Revolution Camouflage Corrector Palette offers several shades so you can address different skin issues. Follow it up with something like the Benefit Bo-ing Industrial Strength Concealer.

The last step to your eye makeup is the same as my last tip: Set your makeup with powder. Dusting powder all over your face and even baking it a little bit will help makeup last under your mask.

When it comes to makeup with your mask, take your pros with your cons. Forget gloss for now, but not the balm under your liquid lipsticks that become matte when they dry. Play up your eyes with fun liners and break out your other eye palettes you might not have tried yet.
