How to Make Skin Look Healthy, Despite Flaws

Beauty / September 22, 2017

This season’s—and the next—beauty look is minimalist. While some of us are brave enough to go barefaced, the trend of the moment is makeup that makes us look like we don’t have it.

An ode to the “no-makeup” makeup look of the past years, the “good skin” look is a contemporary take on using only a few but essential cosmetics that enhance one’s normal features.

Now the question is, what constitutes good-looking skin? Based on the aggressive and effective campaigns of brands like Glossier, good-looking skin is plump, hydrated and glowing from within. It’s also a shoutout to the renewed growing interest in skincare. (Is it just me, or is everyone really getting more excited, diligent and religious about skincare?)

This emphasis on having healthy-looking skin is a departure from yesteryears’ dated obsession with perfection.

Today, freckles, moles, flushed cheeks and a few age spots are acceptable and welcomed to look like charming accessories to the face.

The “good skin” trend, an answer and alternative to dramatic, heavy looks, is the perfect excuse to use less and do more.

How to feign good skin

The look starts with the right foundation. I don’t mean the tinted liquid we slather to cover up imperfections, but rather the solid, moisturizing routine that can help you achieve the look.

Before putting on makeup, prep with the Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil to coat your face with an extra layer of moisture.

Turn your face into a smooth, flawless canvas with hydrating primers like the Too Faced Hangover Face Primer & Booster and the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Hydrating Primer. These would help ease out dry patches and make them less visible.

Dress up your dark circles and acne marks with either a sheer base like the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer or a creamy but hardworking concealer like the Glossier Stretch Concealer.

Don’t forget the brows. If thick enough, leave them as is. But if you like an extra oomph, fill them in with the K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo Lasting 2-Way Eyebrow Waterproof Liquid and Powder.

Make your eyes pop by coating your lashes with a volumizing mascara like the Lancôme Grandiôse Mascara.

Add a healthy flush by dabbing on cream tints like the Becca Beach Tints. Head out with this fresh look, and make your good skin shine.
